Appaloosa is a Mac app that restores the star ratings your Hasselblad X2D II writes in camera. The camera records playback ratings in a place Phocus and Lightroom Classic never read, so ratings assigned on the camera disappear on import. Appaloosa finds those trapped ratings and writes repaired copies that show them.

Requirements

macOS 15 or later. Appaloosa reads 3FR files from the Hasselblad X2D II.

How to use it

  1. Open a folder of 3FR files, or drop one on the window. Appaloosa shows every file, its in-camera rating, and whether that rating is visible to your editing software. Scanning is free.
  2. Click Repair and choose a destination folder. Appaloosa writes corrected copies there. Your original files are never modified.
  3. Import the repaired copies into Phocus or Lightroom. The stars are there.

What the statuses mean

  • Repairable: the file has an in-camera rating your software cannot see. Repair fixes it.
  • No rating: the file was never rated in camera. Nothing to do.
  • Already rated: the file carries a rating you set in Phocus or Lightroom. Appaloosa leaves it alone.
  • Unsupported: the file is not a format Appaloosa can repair, or its structure is unusual. It is reported and skipped.

About your originals

Appaloosa opens source files read-only. Every repair is a copy, a one-byte correction in that copy, and a verification pass: the copy must read back with the correct rating and differ from the original by exactly one byte, or it is deleted and reported as failed. A plain-text report with SHA-256 checksums of each source and copy is written to the destination folder.

Purchases

Scanning and diagnosis are free. Writing repaired copies is a one-time purchase of $9.99, handled by the App Store. If you reinstall or move to a new Mac, use Restore Purchases in the unlock window. Billing questions and refunds are handled by Apple through reportaproblem.apple.com.

Contact

Questions, bug reports, or a file Appaloosa reports as unsupported: email konrad@tonalphoto.com. If a file scans in a way that looks wrong, include the file if you can. Original files are only ever read, never changed, and are deleted after diagnosis.
